Export agents - FAQ

What is an export agent?

Export agents act on behalf of producers and their income is based on commission, paid by the producer for services rendered. The commission is not fixed and it is negotiated between the export agent and the producer. Export agents export produce on behalf of producers.

How do I become an export agent?

One of the provisions of the Act is that
“…no persons shall perform any act as export agent unless a REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE has been issued to him or her” (Section 16 (1) (b)) The applicant must contact the Registrar, Deputy Registrar or Secretary of APAC who, upon request will issue: An application form to apply for registration as an export agent must be completed and submitted to APAC which in turn will issue the certificate. (NB: The form can be downloaded from the website.)

Is there a fee which I will have to pay?

On receiving a certificate, the agent pays a fee and will then be required to pay an annual fee before or on a date determined by the council. This fee is for the maintenance of the certificate.

Are the any other organisations or institutions where an export agent should register?

Yes, you can voluntarily register with Fresh Produce Exporters Forum (FPEF).
